The employer needs a clear timeline
A period without work is not automatically a confession. Recruiters generally need to understand when the previous role ended, whether your availability is current, and whether the explanation raises a practical concern for the vacancy.
Use three parts: the neutral fact, the constructive action, and the reason this role now fits. For example: “My fixed-term contract ended in February. Since then I have refreshed my Excel reporting skills and focused my search on purchasing coordination, where my supplier experience is most relevant.”
What to leave out
Do not volunteer benefit amounts, disputes with an authority, household finances, or private health details. If health affected the timeline, you can state that a resolved personal matter delayed your return and confirm your present availability.
Put the emphasis back on evidence
Move from the gap to an example of work that matters for the vacancy. A concise explanation followed by a concrete achievement is usually stronger than a long defence. Practise aloud until the transition sounds natural rather than memorised.
Honesty matters. So does proportion: answer the question asked, then return to what you can contribute.
